Our Intent
Music teaching at Meysey Hampton Primary School follows the specifications of the EYFS Framework and the National Curriculum. As a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity, we value the importance of pupils’ critical engagement with music through a curricular offer that allows children to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon. Our broad, balanced and progressive whole school music programme ensures the sequential development of musical concepts, knowledge and skills for all pupils.
At Meysey, we welcome and provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music both in class and to an audience. We aspire to enrich pupils’ music learning, through after-school provision, pupil-led events, additional specialist teaching and opportunities for children to showcase their talents and harness their musicality. Our music curriculum helps children to feel part of a community through assemblies and key stage performances, church services and ‘Carols on the Village Green’ with local residents. Learning deepens pupils’ appreciation of a wide variety of music from around the world, develops their ability to appraise a range of musical genres and is instrumental in building the foundations for lifelong relationship with music.
Through our music curriculum our pupils:
- Enjoy and have an appreciation for music.
- Listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, cultures, styles and traditions.
- Can sing with enjoyment and use their voices to create different effects.
- Create and compose music, both on their own and with others.
- Use a range of musical language.
- Make judgements and express personal preferences about the quality and style of music.
- Take part in performances with an awareness of audience.
- Begin to play a musical instrument.
