Our English Intent

Here at Meysey Hampton, literacy permeates our entire curriculum: we recognise the central importance of English as a medium for thought, learning and expression, as well as a subject in its own right.  Children need a facility with language in order to learn, and to play a full and active part as individuals within society.  We therefore view the acquisition and development of language skills as an essential part of the school curriculum and English is given a high priority in our school. Reading enables us to access the world and is at the heart of all learning.  Our aim at Meysey is to foster a lifelong love of reading: we achieve this by encouraging children to read texts from a wide range of genres.  Our well-resourced library provides an enriching environment for reading, and our classrooms contain book collections from which children can select age-appropriate texts to inspire and challenge.

We believe that every child already has the imagination of a writer and that our curriculum will hone their skills, enabling them to get their ideas down on paper!  Our vision is for Meysey pupils to become confident, capable, enthusiastic writers with a genuine love of writing.  In addition, our children will use writing to express themselves and communicate with others - after all, a world without words would be like a universe without stars.

Learning Objectives

The National Curriculum (NC) provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be educated citizens.  It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said; and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.  The NC is just one element in the education of every child.  its specifications provide an outline of the core knowledge around which a wider school curriculum is developed.

These are the key components of those NC specifications for the core subjects for years 1-6.  The learning objectives listed below identify the desired outcomes in terms of pupils knowledge and skills at the end of each academic year for those cohorts.

Pupils in EYFS do not follow the national curriculum, but instead follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework which prescribes the standards that school and childcare providers must meet for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5.  The learning objectives and goals for our reception class are listed below also.
