At the heart of our curriculum is the need to prepare our children for a lifetime of learning. Our curriculum is ambitious for all learners and not only encompasses the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but is layered with rich and varied opportunities. Our aim is to enrich every child's school experience by creating an environment where their curiosity is welcomed and pupils are encouraged and supported to be the best they can be. The exploration of new skills and experiences help to nurture resilience, independence and creativity/ innovation. The curriculum is further enhanced by our commitment to our school values and the church of England’s vision for education. Through this, we provide learning experiences which promote confident, self-motivated pupils, eager to live life in all its fullness.
We follow the National Curriculum. Ten designated subjects form the foundation of our curriculum along with Religious Education (taught according to the Locally Agreed Syllabus for the Diocese of Gloucester) and a Modern Foreign Language for all pupils. Citizenship Personal Social Health Education (CPSHE) is also taught, and as of the 2020-2021 academic year, Relationship Education became a statutory part of the primary curriculum.
Our curriculum is underpinned by the standards and expectations set out in the National Curriculum. It is enhanced with carefully planned opportunities to ensure that all our children access a vibrant, and aspirational learning experience. All class teachers are responsible for providing a curriculum that is suitable for all the pupils in the class, including those with Special Education Needs or Disabilities (SEND) with support from the SENDCo. We have high expectations for all pupils and are committed to ensuring our curriculum complies with the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014. Additional information on this can be found on our SEND Information Page.
Like all state-funded schools, our curriculum is designed to:
- Be broadly based and balanced
- Promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupil and of society
- Prepare pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life
We deliver our curriculum in a one year programme for our reception pupils and over a two year programme for pupils in years 1-6, to meet the needs of our 3 mixed age classes. For many years we have used a topic approach to teaching, driven primarily by our termly focus either as Historians or Geographers.
The three core NC curriculum subjects; Maths, English and science plus the seven foundation subjects; Art, PE, History, Geography, computing, Design and Technology and Music are taught discretely but we also make clear cross-curricular links where subject knowledge, skills and ideas overlap. Each subject has its own progression map and learning across all subjects, for each class cohort is identified.
As a school, we recognise the important role parents/carers play in their children’s learning. We share curriculum information with parents each term as our topics change, hold curriculum information events and give fortnightly class curriculum round-up updates in our newsletter. Curriculum highlights and key events are also shared on our school facebook page
